Google announces Audio call for Duo, new Backup options for Photos and Maps with Real-Time Location Sharing

Directly from the event which was held in San Paolo, Brazil, Google has announced a number of new features requested loudly by users for its products – Google Duo and Photos.

The giant search company has confirmed that in coming weeks, Google Duo will also be able to make a voice call. The audio call for Duo feature, very useful for places with low signals, will just start from Brazil and rollout in the rest of the world over the next few weeks.

Google has also announced new backup options of images and videos on the Google Photo for countries with very limited connectivity.

Until now, Google Photos has a few options for backing up images and video to the cloud. You can hold off all backups until you reach a Wi-Fi connection, backup only photos on mobile data and use Wi-Fi for video, or backup everything on any connection. But now Google Photos has a new option, where low-quality images can be backed up over a mobile connection, and are automatically replaced with higher-resolution copies when you reach a stable Wi-Fi connection.

Apart from audio call for Duo and new Backup options for Photos, Google also announced that it will revamp its Maps app to allow users to share their real-time locations, in order to boost engagement on a product of increasing strategic importance to the search giant.

Within the next week, users worldwide will be able to share where they are in real time on devices running both iOS and Android operating systems, Google said. The feature is part of an array of new tools aimed at boosting the effectiveness of Google Maps, which analysts say is critical to the company’s ambitions in commerce and transport.

The location-sharing feature is aimed at helping people find each other in crowded places, such as concerts and conferences, and users will retain control over who they share their whereabouts with and for how long, said Google executive Jen Fitzpatrick, who leads Google Maps.
