Blu Phones Reportedly Receiving New Security Update

Security update issues for Android smartphones are increasingly becoming more important with vulnerabilities. Now a security firm claims it has found Blu Phones being sold in the US that transmitted personally identifiable information (PII) to servers in China. Blu Phones

Blu has reportedly started pushing out the Android security update for its affected top rated Blu phones including Blu R1 HD, Energy X Plus 2, Studio Touch, Advance 4.0 L2, Neo XL, and Energy Diamond. Information that was collected and transmitted included the text messages, contact lists, call history, the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) and the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) from a user’s phone. In some versions of the software, it even included fine-grained location. This transfer was happening without any initiation to the customer. Notably, even anti-virus and other security apps on phones were not able to discover the ADUP Media threat, as they normally disregard software already bundled on the phone by the smartphone manufacturer. 2

As per a report by Security firm Kryptowire has found several Android smartphones being sold through US retailers like Amazon and Best Buy that contained the contentious firmware. The common denominator between the smartphones was the presence of commercial Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) made by Adups or ADUP Tech, a back door found to be collecting and transmitting sensitive data to its servers in China, apart from having the ability to executive remote commands with escalated privileges and the ability to reprogram devices. 1

Blu Cell Phone Website – said, “Our customer’s privacy and security are of the upmost importance and priority.” “The affected application has since been self-updated and the functionality verified to be no longer collecting or sending this information.” The company has issued a software update that will apparently fix the “security issue”, which is said to affect 120,000 of its devices. Or you can check manually, go to Settings -> Apps -> Show System -> Wireless Update. If your app’s version is from 5.0.x to 5.3.x, then you need to immediately contact the company. Amazon is also informing users that their smartphones will receive an update.
