Asus TUF FX504G Review

Referring to Asus gaming laptops we will probably remember the popular ROG series. But today We want to review a new gaming laptop from a Taiwanese manufacturer called Asus TUF FX504G.

Design

For a long time, we were so excited to look at a gaming laptop. FX504G impressed us by the outer body pattern which is very unique like a computer on the alien spacecraft.

However, if looking closely then the whole device looks very neat and not as boring as many other ROG series laptops. The polycarbonate body with vertical scratches feels like it’s made of metal.

With a weight of 2.3 kg, the Asus TUF FX504G is rated average weight compared to many thin gaming laptops today. This will help gamers become more portable when they can carry around to play games.

About the port, We see the laptop is somewhat limited in a number of ports, perhaps to optimize for gamers or not?

On the left-hand side is the place where all the ports are connected, including charging port, LAN port, HDMI port, USB 2.0 port, two USB 3.0 ports, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

While the right side has to be empty, gamers have more space to manipulate the mouse. The back side is the two large heatsink to cool the laptop.

Display

The Asus TUF FX504G features a 15.6-inch display with Full HD resolution, 60Hz scanning frequency. There is one thing we find a little pity that the screen border of the FX504G a bit thick, compared to the new ROG gaming laptops, this is a little bit disadvantage for FX504G.

Asus TUF FX504G screen

In fact, We have a brighter display with beautiful colors, high contrast, wide viewing angle for the better gaming experience. However, the screen has not very good anti-glare, perhaps because it was optimized for gamers to play indoors, not for someone who likes to play in outdoor.

Keyboard and Trackpad

We have never criticized any of the gaming laptop keyboards because they often provide a very comfortable user experience and the Asus TUF FX504G is no exception. The keyboard has a pretty deep button, the feel of the keys bounce, the size of the keys and the appropriate key distance to help you confidently not to be wrong when gaming or typing.

Like the ROG SCAR, the four WASD keys on the FX504G are highlighted in red. The backlight of the laptop has up to three levels of brightness, and this is the red backlight that matches the “quality” of the device.

Asus TUF FX504G trackpad

The trackpad on the FX504G is quite spacious and is decorated by four arrows for four angles that look quite interesting. The experience of using the trackpad surface smooth movement, the response rate of the cursor is as fast as the bottom touch.

Performance

The laptop that we have come for review is powered by the Intel Core i5 Coffee Lake, 8300H, 2.30 GHz Processor, coupled with 8GB DDR4 (2GB), 2666MHz RAM, 1TB HDD with M.2 PCIe support and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB discrete graphics card.

Performance testing with Geekbench software, the FX504G reached up to 86721 points.

Asus TUF FX504G Performance

Of course, with a gaming laptop like the FX504G, it’s more than just the performance of traditional office applications.

Switch to the gaming, we tested it with a popular game today: CS:GO.

Configured to the maximum, the average frame rate measured by Fraps software is 97 FPS.

We can see with GTX 1050Ti 4GB discrete graphics, the FX504G can carry high graphics games better.

Speaker and Heatsink

The speakers are good, dynamic surround sound, but not very well with the music or EDM because the bass of the speakers is a little bit weak. Switching to gaming, the sound of the laptop can be said to be optimal for the FPS gaming experience where gunshots, footsteps, or explosive effects are portrayed in an authentic way, helping to create a sense of positioning in the air. So, it is very clear to judge the path of the opponent’s steps.

In terms of heat dissipation, the FX504G uses the dual heatsink. After about 2 hours of playing CS:GO continuously, the fan has not switched to the Overboost mode and we feel only warm but not very hot. So we can evaluate the heat dissipation on this gaming laptop works very well.

Battery life

With gaming laptops, We usually plug-n-play every time to get the best performance. A quick test of battery life with Batterymon software under device conditions to maximum screen brightness, WiFi on, speaker volume level at 70% and only use basic software like Word, Excel, Chrome, Facebook, listen to music, etc. Then the software measures the battery life of the FX504G is abou8t 5 hours 36 minutes.

And if you do not plug the charger while gaming, the performance of the laptop will greatly reduce and now the battery life reduced to about 2 hours only.

Final line

At the price of $799.99 for a gaming laptop like the Asus TUF FX504G, this is a reasonable choice because of the cost factor of the device, which is well worth the configuration, performance, and design. This laptop is sure to fit most gamers today, or the office workers do graphics or design.

Pros:

  • Beautiful design, optimized for gaming
  • Very comfortable Keyboard and trackpad
  • Highly configurable and high performance, dedicated to FPS games
  • Good heatsink

Cons:

  • Display with thick edges
  • Average battery life
